Chesapeake Medical Imaging: Changing the Radiology Experience, One Patient at a Time

Category : NEWS

Advances in research and technology are changing medical diagnosis and treatment options across the globe at a dizzying pace. And in Maryland, Chesapeake Medical Imaging is keeping pace -– participating in cutting-edge research, adopting new technologies, and expanding access, without sacrificing the professional expertise and personal service that inspired one of Maryland’s Top Docs to establish the group in 2001.

“When people are sick or injured, they need compassion and kindness, says CMI Founder and Medical Director Dr. Mark Baganz. “Our team is committed to providing the best care and service available anywhere, patients whose very lives may depend on accurate, timely diagnostics.”

Expansion | Expertise

With the addition of three new offices in 2017, CMI now serves patients at 14 locations across Baltimore, Annapolis and the Eastern Shore, allowing for same-day appointments in most cases, and reducing travel time – critical for patients suffering with pain, illness or injury.

Over the past year, CMI welcomed several new physicians to its team, including experts specializing in Musculoskeletal Radiology and MRI.

Among the first to bring 3-D mammography to the area, CMI now employs this new technology exclusively at all its breast imaging locations. “This digital technology lets us locate smaller tumors within individual layers of tissue, allowing for earlier and more accurate diagnosis that can result in extraordinary cure rates,” says Dr. Eva Duckett, renowned breast imaging expert and director of the program at CMI.

As part of a continuing expansion of diagnostic imaging options, CMI now offers Nuclear Medicine (SPECT) at a new state-of-the-art facility in Glen Burnie.

CMI is also among the top 5 Maryland facilities offering DaTscan for Visualization of Dopamine Transporters in Patients with Suspected Parkinsonian Syndromes — a unique study to confirm diagnoses for patients challenged with movement disorders.

To reduce its carbon footprint as well as utility costs, CMI is harnessing the power of the sun to generate electricity at its Annapolis flagship facility. Completed in 2016, the major solar installation includes 176 south-facing panels that generate more than 59,000 kW hours annually — equivalent to the energy it takes to run four average American homes.

In 2017, CMI participated in Imaging Dementia—Evidence for Amyloid Scanning (IDEAS), a $100 million study of nearly 19,000 patients, to determine the clinical usefulness of scanning brain amyloid deposits to help evaluate patients with memory loss.

“With no single test currently available, this imaging represents a potential major advance in assessing people with cognitive impairment, which will provide critical information regarding diagnoses and treatment of those suffering memory loss,” says CMI’s Dr. Kevin Berger, a respected imaging expert in Alzheimer’s disease, who has developed quantitative analysis tools for scan interpretation.

As an independently owned and operated organization, CMI team members make engaging in community charitable and educational efforts a priority. The team annually supports Bras for a Cause, a Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser held each October in Anne Arundel County, as well as numerous educational events at local schools.

In 2017, other highlights included: Sponsorship of the University of Maryland Baltimore/Washington Medical Center Mission Impossible event, supporting private patient rooms, new operating rooms, and community health care needs; sponsorship of Carver’s Crew, a foundation that supports mid-shore families in the wake of tragedy; a partnership with Johns Hopkins Priority Partners to facilitate mammograms for women in Easton; and sponsorship of Hidden Beauty: Exploring the Aesthetics of Medical Science, a unique exhibit at The Mitchell Gallery, St. John’s College, Annapolis.

Having earned an extraordinary measure of respect among peers, patients and employees, CMI is often formally recognized for providing the highest quality medical imaging services available anywhere, with uncompromising, unparalleled service to patients, their families, referring medical professionals, and the community.

Founder and Medical Director Mark Baganz, M.D. has been ranked a Top Radiologist by What’s Up Magazine since 2005, and was recently nominated for Ernst & Young’s prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year Honor for the second consecutive year.

CMI is also a proud recipient of Top Workplace honors from The Baltimore Sun Media Group for three consecutive years, a recognition of organizational health and workplace culture as experienced by its employees.
